A Difficult Puzzle

You have passed all the exams in your first year studying to become a wizard. One test remains though. It isn't a test you have been prepared for. The purpose is to test your wits when you encounter something you are NOT prepared for.

You are led down some stairs to the basement and shoved into a small room. The door closes and locks behind you. From somewhere you hear the voice of your teacher:

"So my friend, it is time to test your wits! You have until tomorrow to escape this puzzle if you want to continue your studies. Good luck!"


You take a good look around...

Northern Room
You are in an almost featureless room with concrete walls. The door out of here is in the north wall but it is locked with three different padlocks. There are passages that lead east and west. At the centre of the concrete floor, the number "1" has been written with white paint. There is a small recess in the southern wall.  

The fairy Melinda is hovering a few centimeters above your head.
